Online Women Workshop on Reconfigurable Intellingent Surfaces and Integrated Sensing and Communications
As fifth-generation (5G) wireless networks continue to roll out across the globe, researchers and industry experts are already turning their sights to the next major breakthrough—6G wireless networks. On November 25th, 2024, the EU-funded META WIRELESS and ISLANDS projects will host a special Online Women’s Workshop focused on the most promising advancements in 6G technology, specifically Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RIS) and Integrated Sensing and Communications (ISAC).
This workshop will feature prominent female researchers who are driving innovation in wireless technology, offering insights into the challenges and opportunities that these cutting-edge technologies bring to the evolving 6G landscape.
Why Focus on RIS and ISAC?
Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RIS) are at the heart of future wireless technology, enabling wireless signals to be dynamically controlled and optimized, leading to more efficient communication networks. Similarly, Integrated Sensing and Communications (ISAC) represents a breakthrough concept where sensing and communication functions are combined, paving the way for smart applications like automated driving, environmental monitoring, and security.
Both technologies are essential building blocks for 6G and demonstrate the transformative potential that future networks hold. By addressing these technologies, the META WIRELESS and ISLANDS projects aim to shed light on the essential research directions that will influence the connectivity of tomorrow.
Closing the Gender Gap in 6G Research
While the workshop will be deeply technical, it also has a broader mission: to increase gender diversity in the 6G research community. In technology and STEM fields, women are often underrepresented, especially in emerging research areas. This workshop not only highlights the work of female experts in RIS and ISAC but also serves as a platform to inspire the next generation of women to pursue careers in wireless communications.
This initiative aligns with both projects’ commitment to promoting inclusivity within advanced technology sectors. By creating spaces where women’s contributions are celebrated and by providing young women with role models in 6G research, this workshop will make a significant contribution toward reducing the gender gap in tech.
